Shenzhen Technology University Business School Successfully Hosted A Case Method Workshop

The Business School of Shenzhen Technology University hosted a Case Methods Workshop on April 16, 2024.It is also part of the series events of“China Case Method Tour” by China Europe International Business School (CEIBS)Case Center(Chinacases.org). Dr. CHEN Bingliang, the Case Method Consultant, Institutional Service Manager, and Case Researcher,fromCEIBS Case Centerserved as the lecturer and facilitator of the workshop. 18BS faculty members and one faculty member fromtheCollege of Urban Transportation and Logisticshave participated.The workshop focused onadopting case methods to bring context to theclassroomand motivatestudentsto apply what they have learnt inspecificbusiness contexts.

Dr Chen pointed out that casemethodsplay an important role in teachingbusiness contents, helping students to learn how to make decisions. By putting themselves in the shoes of the managers/individualsin the case,studentscandevelop theircritical thinking,problem-solving, anddecision-making skills. He also emphasized that business education is not just about imparting knowledge, but also about teaching students how to apply knowledge inreal scenarios which is important in such a dynamicbusiness environment.Participantslearnt how to design and select appropriate cases, as well as how to organize and lead in-depth discussions with students during the training.

By providing a list of learningobjectivesanddiscussionquestions,Dr. Chenled participants to reflect and discussonhow to effectively designa case in terms of drafting the learningobjectivesanddiscussionquestions.Through discussion, participants were able toexploredifferentcase designsand share their insightswhichbroadenedtheir perspectives.

This workshop provides anopportunityforfaculty memberstoexploreand learn from the expert as well as from each other. A casemethodcan influence business teaching and have a long term impact ondevelopingstudents’ competencies.
