In the Evening of May 13, 2021, Business School held a lecture in Room 102 Teaching Building C-5 titled “Entrepreneurship Master Unveils the Mask of Cross-border E-Commerce”. Professor Li Jie invited Mr. Jiang Zhenyang, the founder and CEO of Shenzhen Xinshengshang Technology Company Ltd., to talk on the policies, status, future and operation of cross-border e-commerce with his own affluent experience. This lecture is an in-course guest lecture of Professor Li’s course “International Tax”. The aim is to align the most current business practice with classroom teaching and help students to understand deeper the business base for taxation activities. It also represents the “technology plus business” orientation of the Business School.

First one on the right: Mr. Jiang Zhenyang

Cross-border e-commerce industry experienced an outstanding development in 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, and has become burning-hot in 2021 that there is rumor “all the new apartments are bought by the Amazon sellers”. The total import and export volume reached 31.9 Trillion RMB in 2020, with an increase of 7.3 trillion RMB from the previous year. Cross-border ecommerce contributed 7.2 trillion RMB increase showing that traditional international trade was impacted badly by the pandemic. So the cross-border e-commerce industry got a lot preferential policies and support from our country. Among all the cross-border e-commerce companies, Mr. Jiang’s firm captured nearly 300 million RMB revenue last year and ranked Top 15 China Sellers on eBay. Mr. Jiang pointed out that the concentration in the industry is very low that among more than 700, 000 players only less than 2000 companies hiring more than 100 employees. The industry entrance barrier is not quite high yet so it could be a place to start a business with.

The lecture was full of operable insights and welcomed by students from multiple colleges across the university. During the class, students are enthusiastic to interact with the instructor. Students tried asking from their interests the specific operational questions to Mr. Jiang. The question and answer section lasted as long as the lecturing section. Many students stayed and continued to ask questions even the lecture is formally ended showing thick interests and deep thoughts regarding starting up a business.

Among many, a senior student has already registered at e-commerce platform, selected product line and signed supplier but do not know what to do next. Some other students showed close interests on customer base and supply chain in terms of South East Asia area. There is also a student prepares to read a master in supply chain in France inquiring Mr. Jiang about how to utilized the time in France. Mr. Jiang answered all the questions with patience and insightful thoughts and gave out his contact method. He encouraged students for future communication with smile that the bosses in cross-border e-commerce industry never worry losing business by sharing knowledge but on the contrary always hate that the employees learned too slow.

At last, Professor Li passed Mr. Jiang a small suit of notebook on behalf of the Business School and thanked all the students at present for actively participating the lecture. Professor Li also advises students to jump off the mindset of “finding a job after reading a college degree” but instead to exploit the opportunities offered by Shenzhen the world level business and innovation platform to become someone like Mr. Jiang who creates jobs for others.
