Prof. Wang Hua (Harry)



Faculty Introduction

Professor, Ph.D. (University of Tokyo), CFA, Director of Financial Innovation and FinTech Research Center.

Dr. Wang has more than 10 years of professional and research experiences in international capital markets, financial products, FinTech, etc. His professional working experience includes Credit Suisse, Barclays Capital and HKEX, etc., and 5 years as Associate Research Fellow at China Institute of Finance and Capital Markets.

Dr. Wang has excellent proficiency in English and Japanese, with long-term international experience in Tokyo, London and Hong Kong, etc. He also participated in a number of research projects focusing on financial markets and government policies, and published tens of research articles and papers.


1.We know that you graduated from the University of Tokyo with a doctor's degree. What do you think of the similarities and differences of the teaching methods in traditional universities in Japan and China?

Harry: There are similarities between the education modes in Japan and China. Meanwhile, the types of universities in Japan are divided into public universities, private universities, single-discipline universities and other different types. Different universities have their own characteristics. Take the university of Tokyo as an example, students are encouraged to participate in practical topics during their undergraduate study, so that what they learn from the classroom can be applied and published in the form of reports or even papers, which can help develop their practical and creative abilities at an early stage.

2.In 2020, our International Business will involve finance-related courses. Could you please introduce these courses? What are the main benefits it will bring for business students?

Harry: We will set up the finance, international capital markets and asset management, securities investment practices as subjects, these courses will not only tells the basic concept and application of financial, also about the operation of the international financial market, investment and management content, through learning these courses, students will hold the knowledge of finance and investment related subjects as well as the concrete application in the financial markets. It is also necessary for business school students to pursue relevant careers.

3.Many students prefer to study finance courses. What is your opinion on the career prospect and employment market of this field?

Harry: Finance is an important and indispensable part of economic activities, and it is an important and practical application of a very wide range of disciplines. China's economic and financial field is moving towards the direction of marketization and specialization, and finance is becoming increasingly important to China's economic and social development. It is beneficial to study financial courses and understand the theoretical knowledge and application of finance. As a promising field, it is believed that the demand for talents in finance will continue to increase in the future.

4.You worked for Barclays Capital, Credit Suisse and other multinational investment Banks and financial institutions before and have rich international working experience in London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, China and other places. Can you share some interesting work experience?

Harry: The experience of working in the transnational investment bank is very beneficial. It is not only the accumulation of career experience, but also a good opportunity to understand the habits of different cultural backgrounds in different countries.For example, when I worked in London, there were colleagues from seven or eight countries in one department, including Western Europe, the United States, Russia, India and Pakistan, which could be said colleagues are from all over the world, which enables me to be familiar with the time difference of major international financial centers and the feeling of globalization.

5.In addition to teaching, we learned that you are also the director of the Financial Innovation and Fintech Research Center. Could you tell us something about your research field?

Harry: With the continuous innovation in the field of finance and fintech, this research has become increasingly important.The research object of the Financial Innovation And Fintech Research Center contains the innovative ideas in financial products and markets, such as the trading patterns and applications of financial derivatives, also contains how fintech, including blockchain and smart contracts, can be applied to the financial sector.

6.Many students want to major in finance, and they want to take the CFA (chartered financial analyst) exam to work for companies like Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan. When is the right time for them to take the exam? Can you recommend some websites and books to help them better understand financial knowledge?

Harry: I think this is different from person to person, which is closely related to the students' learning background and interest characteristics. If students are interested in working in financial institutions, it is recommended for them to carry out some relevant studies under the condition of learning, formal teaching materials and to review the information provided by professional exam under the subject of practical application.

7.What do you expect from the upcoming 2020 cohort students of SZTU Business School?

Harry: We are a new school, SZTU Business School will be the business school which is highly dedicated to innovation. I wish you a happy university life, and do hope that our students will keep a pioneering spirit to start their wonderful university lives!
